Other compelling stories
The city of San Antonio has taken over ownership of the former Brooks Air Force Base. The city wants to create a lovely mixed-use, new urbanist environment where scientists and "the creative classes" would be drawn. So far, they've sold some of their land to a Wal-Mart developer.
Built on the outer edges of the Spanish frontier, San Antonio's architectural flavor is a mixture of its Spanish heritage, German upbringing and Sun Belt trends. These days, the city's planning department is returning to its Spanish roots.
Because young, creative workers prefer to live in downtown, city planners and developers are struggling to beef up the housing offerings in Downtown San Antonio.
