Like most  journalists, I look forward to meeting people and learning new things. And I appreciate a good challenge. This is why I've always enjoyed writing about a variety of topics -- from financial investments to personal profiles.

Whether writing travel accounts, character profiles or other feature stories, my job begins before I type the first word or interview the first person. It begins with research. Through background and follow-up research, I gain a fuller understanding of my topic, my characters,
and the storyline. Using research as a foundation for writing helps any writer do a better job, whether they have great or limited familiarity with the topic.
