HEADLINE: Helping kids to cope ; At bereavement center, children talkabout horror of attack
BYLINE: Analisa Nazareno
BODY: Kindergartner Ricky Lopez wants to take a machine gun and hurt whoever orchestrated the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
"I want them to feel sorry for what they did," the 5-year-old said.
Matthew Redus, 11, also wants an eye for an eye.
"I hope that we do the same thing to them that they did to us," said the Barbara Jordan Intermediate School student.
Such feelings are a normal part of the grieving process, said counselors at the Children's Bereavement Center, where a group counseling session took place Saturday afternoon to help families cope with the terrorist attacks.
But when these children say such things, it stops their parents cold and turns them speechless.
"I don't want my kids to think violence is the answer to everything," said Matthew's mother, Kim Redus.
"Are they going to grow up with hate? Are they going to grow up thinking war is normal?," questioned Ricky's mother, Tami Tyler. "I'm very worried about that. I don't want them desensitized, thinking war is normal."
